How Enlitened began

Learning from employee engagement

The concept for Enlitened was born in the summer of 2018, when we identified that there had been a revolution in the tools that help companies improve employee engagement – but nothing equivalent had been created to support student engagement, and particularly student wellbeing.

Enlitened is a new division of The Student Room Group with an experienced student engagement, technology, psychology and commercial team.
We have full access to The Student Room Group resources so we can continue to invest in building a transformational product for years to come.

From evidence-led approaches, to world class cyber-security and data protection, we are obsessive about every detail.

We consult with, and seek advice from, relevant sector experts and stakeholders – including the Office for Students ‘student welfare and safeguarding’ and ‘access & participation evaluation’ teams, Universities UK, mental health charities, researchers, NUS and other sector bodies.

We’re proud to be supported by our Advisory Board of Deputy and Pro Vice Chancellors and other senior leaders, UUK, and by our university development partners.

  • “Enlitened is a partner in one of the 10 successful projects supported through the OfS’s £6m Challenge Competition which aims to drive a step change in mental health support for students. Enlitened is a key partner, amongst others, in a bid being led by Northumbria University which uses innovative technology to improve mental health and learning outcomes for all students and match students in need to appropriate support.”

Our unique approach is designed to maximise continuous improvement in wellbeing, engagement, student experience, continuation and equal opportunities, and therefore NSS, TEF and league tables.

  • “Enlitened’s diligent, evidence-led approach and speed of development have been great to witness. Our students have very much enjoyed engaging with Enlitened, and the wellbeing data generated as a result have the potential to be genuinely transformative. The future of student engagement is emerging, and we are excited to be part of it.”

  • “It can be difficult trying to measure student satisfaction with email questionnaires. This new approach is great because it’s instant and constantly being updated. Between us, the student union and university we can work to address issues in real-time.”

  • “As Enlitened rolls out across the whole university, I am convinced it will be genuinely transformative. It gives us a leap forward in proactive approachable support for students, transforms conversation with our student community, and is a major shift in the timeliness and detail of the data we have to improve the whole student experience.”

  • “The Student Room team have spent 18 years supporting students online. We hope that their Enlitened programme can help future generations of students have the best possible university experience and we are happy to be exploring ways in which Student Minds and The Student Room can work together in the future.”
